Full Day Kindergarten: Year One
In 2010, SJTA and SJUSD created a Memorandum of Understanding to support and plan for the success of full day kindergarten (FDK). As a result of the MOU, a joint full day kindergarten task force was established. The charge of this task force was to assist and provide information regarding issues related to full day kindergarten and to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. The Task Force was comprised of full day kindergarten teachers, administrators, district personnel and SJTA. The FDK Task Force met for three full days to complete the charge issued by the SJUSD and SJTA bargaining teams.
The focus was to:
- Identify ways to communicate the work of the Task Force to the general kindergarten community.
- To provide ideas on ways to support the full day kindergarten program (supervision, assessment, instructional, transition).
- Provide samples of effective models of instruction and schedules to assist schools moving to full day kindergarten.
- Provide a common list of facilities, equipment, and materials for implementing full day kindergarten.
- Provide recommendations for professional development/learning for full day kindergarten teachers.
- Identify needed data sets to use to evaluate the full day program and the impact on student achievement and schools.
As a result of our discussions, an e-mail distribution list of all kindergarten teachers has been created. Use this list to communicate with all SJ kindergarten teachers. To access the list, type "Kindergarten Teachers" in the "To" box.
Additionally, a forum is under construction at forums.sanjuan.edu, which will be entitled KINDERCHAT. This is a moderated group forum for all Kindergarten teachers, including Kick Start Kindergarten.
A learning team for schools that implemented FDK in August has been meeting monthly to discuss, share, and collaborate around issues related to FDK.
